Size 18, Size 18 and a Size 18

After reading a recent post on the blog Modern Girl Friday, “What They Don't Tell You About (Weight) Loss”, my friend Lilly White reminds me a wonderful rant I can’t wait to go public with. Why, oh why can’t universal sizes actually be universal?

Have you ever gone into a store, picked a size up that you normally fit in only to find, it in fact doesn’t fit. If you are anything like me you go jump on the scale, break out the measuring tape, just to make sure you didn’t gain any weight. You sigh with some relief and then steam over the fact the tagged size isn’t really that size at all. It’s is utterly confusing and frustrating. There are certain clothes I refuse to buy just for the fact that I know it will not be my somewhat Universal size. I hate the way I feel just at the thought that I had to purchase something in a size larger.

Now I am not a petite or thin gal and for the most part I am comfortable with who I am; size and all. This one doesn’t mean I don’t care what my weight is, or two that I ignore where it is at. Even now I am trying to loose weight, and not just the baby weight I put on, because I can tell you there was a lot more weight to lose before I had the baby, then there is baby weight left. But it is such a hit to the self esteem to go into a store, any store and try something that should be in a universal size and have it not fit, and not because your body shape is any different than before.

It’s like you have to memorize what size you actually are for each store. It totally throws the idea of universal sizes out the door. Oh and don’t think it is just for women either. I have the same trouble with my baby girl. Now my baby girl seems to have a lot of her mom in her, as she is growing at an abnormally fast rate. Thank goodness it is only in height and not in the weight. (She is going to be thin like her daddy) Well anyways my husband- a devoted Fighting Irish Fan, bought my daughter an adorable cheerleading outfit to help cheer on the Irish through football season. They only made item for 6 months and older. Dying to see here in it, he ordered it anyways. To our luck and astonishment, it fit when she was only 3 months old. And I am not talking about fitting and being a little loose, not this outfit fit perfect. She would only be able to wear it for 2 months. There was no way she would be able to wear it now being just about 7 months old now.

Well I also ordered a x-large football jersey from this company (because isn’t cute when Mom and babies match- cough cough- ok so it is only cute for the mom) and so I know you can guess what happened with the jersey. That’s right it was too small, but not just too small, extremely too small. X- Large my rear, this shirt couldn’t of fit a high school student, well maybe one of those twiggy girls but that doesn’t qualify if as an X-Large. And incase you were wondering no it was not a youth jersey, because I asked and was told it was an adult women’s jersey. Ha- I sent that baby back really fast along with a note stating they really needed to check their sizes.

Case in point, don’t be surprise if a Size 18, is not a size 18, is not a Size 18. Oh and do me a favor. Tell someone about it!!!! Make a stand for UNIVERSAL SIZES to be UNIVERSAL!!!!! GO UNIVERSAL!!!

Well played and said, Sunny!

The fashion industry needs a serious wake-up call! You're losing money by shrinking everything! Sheesh!

You keep on keeping on, Girl! I'm sure its all women who have this problem, not just the big girls. I will fight the good fight until they get it right!

*hugs*
